The ability to perform a laparoscopic colectomy through small (1 cm) incisions has significant appeal for both patients and surgeons. In this context, Laparoscopic surgery has come a long way from the time simple benign surgeries were performed to now when laparoscopic colectomy has become a standard of care. It is proven that the quality of life after such surgery is better than that after the open colectomy technique. The issues related to equivalence in terms of cancer control have been decisively answered by various research studies.
Laparoscopic colectomy has reduced the health care cost by reducing the number of days hospital stay and other requirements by half. From this it emerges that laparoscopic colectomy is a significantly better procedure than the standard open colectomy for colon cancer in terms of quality of life despite the minimal extra costs that may be incurred. Worldwide colon cancer surgery has moved on and has embraced this modern medical technique.
