Yes, for eligible families. Ayushman Bharat health insurance, formally the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY), pays for cancer treatment at empanelled public and private hospitals across India. That includes surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and the diagnostic tests needed to stage the disease. Cover is up to ₹5 lakh per family per year, cashless, and shared by everyone in the family. Two catches matter. The hospital has to be empanelled under the scheme, and the treatment has to fall inside the approved packages. So the real question isn’t just whether cancer is covered. It’s whether your hospital is on the list, and whether your plan is covered.

Dr. Sandeep Nayak, who provides cancer treatment in Bangalore, says families do better when they sort out the paperwork early. “Cancer treatment usually runs in stages: surgery, chemotherapy, sometimes radiation. Schemes like PM-JAY work through approved packages and prior authorisation, so it helps to know the plan before you ask for approval. Take your reports to the Ayushman Mitra desk, ask what’s covered at each stage, and confirm that the hospital is empanelled before you’re admitted.”

Coverage questions are easier to answer once the treatment plan is clear. If you’re still working out the plan, our team can go through your reports and explain the steps, so you know what to ask at the hospital’s insurance desk.

What PM-JAY Cancer Surgery Coverage Includes?

Ayushman Bharat Cancer Care Highlights
  • Cancer surgery is covered under the scheme’s approved packages at empanelled hospitals. Each package has a rate fixed by the scheme, so the amount isn’t negotiated case by case.
  • Chemotherapy cycles are included, along with the hospital admission that goes with them.
  • Radiation courses are covered too. Our page on radiation therapy explains what a course involves.
  • Newer treatments may not sit inside the packages. Not every cancer medicine is covered, so ask before assuming, especially for options like immunotherapy.

Ayushman Bharat Cancer Treatment: How to Use the Cover?

Ayushman Bharat Cancer Treatment How to Use the Cover
  • Check whether your family is listed. You can do it on the beneficiary portal or by calling the helpline, 14555.
  • Complete eKYC and get the Ayushman card. It can be downloaded through the app or the portal, or made at an empanelled hospital’s help desk.
  • Check that your hospital is empanelled before admission, using the scheme’s hospital search. Planned surgery needs prior authorisation, and that can take several days, so don’t leave it to the last week.
  • Know what’s coming. If chemotherapy is planned, read about the common chemotherapy side effects. If radiation is planned, our blog on skin care during radiation therapy helps.

What Decides Whether Your Cancer Treatment Is Covered?

A few things come into play, and most of them are worth checking before the first admission.

  • Eligibility. Families on the SECC 2011 database or in the listed occupational categories qualify. Since October 2024, anyone aged 70 or over can also enrol through the Ayushman Vay Vandana card, whatever their income.
  • The hospital. Cashless treatment works only at empanelled hospitals, and not every hospital accepts the scheme.
  • The procedure. Treatment has to fall within an approved package. Not every cancer medicine or treatment does.
  • Authorisation. Planned surgery and extended radiation usually need prior approval from the state health authority.
  • The limit. The ₹5 lakh is a family floater, so one member’s treatment uses up what’s left for the rest. The scheme covers hospitalisation, not outpatient visits. Senior members get a separate top-up through the Vay Vandana card.
  • Your state. Karnataka runs its own Arogya Karnataka scheme alongside PM-JAY, and what a family is entitled to can differ depending on which list it’s on, so ask at the hospital desk.
